Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do?

Alice of Kristopher & Co. I am a florist, wedding planner and coordinator.

How long have you been a florist?

For a year and a half. I, with my sister-in-law started an event floral business in the States and I recently moved here to New Zealand and began my journey under company Kristopher & Co.

How would you describe your style?

Garden-inspired and very European. I am known to not use a single stem of greenery in my bouquets if I can help it, but just use the foliage on the florals in the recipe.

Do you have a favourite flower or floral combination and why?

Garden roses. I adore the flexibility in the stem and that I can make it look at me from any direction in a bouquet or arrangement. I like each flower to breathe and have its own space, garden roses are the perfect flower to accomplish that.

How do brides go about ordering your services, (what’s the process, how much time should they allow etc)?

I am very flexible with my time frames. The other week, I had a bride get in touch the week before! I am easy contacted through Instagram, Facebook, Email or Website. I usually reply to brides with a few images of inspiration in my design style and see if their vision and mine align. I often refer other florists as my style isn't for everyone, and I'm often referred to for that reason too. Brides usually want a quote up front, often they are bargain hunting. I so this occasionally, but truly focus on making sure I am the right fit for the couple in my designs and personality - especially when planning or designing a wedding. That aspect is crucial.

Any advice on choosing flowers/floral arrangements for couples getting married?

I have been fortunate with my brides because each one has said to me, "do as you like." Establish trust in your florist, first and foremost. Their creativity will shine if they are given room to breathe. We ALWAYS have your best interests in mind (well, I do anyway!). Put your money where your photos are. Bouquets, ceremony piece and head table. If you are tight on budget - don't skimp in these areas. Often people say that flowers don't matter because they're perishable and non memorable. I'll tell you something for free, they're in almost every one of your photos that you have for a lifetime. Invest what you can in florals.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Mustard. My favourite roses are Toffee and Honey Dijon, neither of which we can get here in NZ. I mourn them often and are constantly trying to find alternatives. So maybe if I add the colour to the crayon box, it will be added to the wholesale list!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

All of nothing Netflix / Books. If I start a book, I guarantee you it's finished by the end of the day. Same with Netflix. I get so engrossed I have to know the storyline from beginning to end ASAP.

What advice would you give your 16 year old self?

What wouldn't I say?! Don't get caught up in the things that don't matter. The bigger picture is always better. Don't judge others and put your head down and work when they judge you. Be kind, always, always be kind.

What is your hidden talent?

Not so hidden, bu classical music. I have my undergrad and graduate degrees in Viola performance and played with the NZ Symphony Orchestra before doing my Masters in Toronto in classical music. I met my farmer hub and had to slow down because of location. But I'm still found on stage with the NZSO and Hawke's Bay Orchestra or giving mini recitals.
